Breakfast strata is one of those tastes-complex-but-simple-to-make dishes. I like it too because you can get creative and put pretty much any meat, cheese, or veggies in it you like! I’ve tried several combinations, but unanimously my family’s favorite is with Gouda and sausage. Such a delicious blend of flavors!

This is pretty quick to make on a lazy Sunday morning, but just as quick to prep the night before and serve for breakfast before work and school. A little carb, a little protein, a little fabulous to fuel your day!

Sausage Strata

1 lb Johnsonville sausages, thawed
6 slices of bread, preferably day old, cubed
2 cups shredded Gouda cheese
6 eggs
2 cups milk
1 tsp salt
1 tsp ground dry mustard

Chop sausages into half inch pieces and place in a medium skillet . Cook over medium heat until evenly brown. Drain, set aside.

Layer bread cubes, sausage, and shredded cheese in a lightly greased 8×8 baking dish. In a bowl, beat together the eggs, milk, salt, and mustard. Pour the egg mixture over the bread cube mixture. Cover, and refrigerate at least an hour.

Remove the strata dish from the refrigerator 30 minutes before baking. Preheat oven to 350  degrees F.

Bake approximately 60 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Let stand 10 minutes before serving.
