I love heirloom recipes, so let’s make tonight’s blog posts a two-for!
Typically I’m talking about the recipe my mom, my mom’s mom, and my mom’s mom’s mom have handed down over the years, but tonignt I’m going to give you one from my Grandma, Betty Lutton, my Dad’s mom.
Betty Lutton was born Elisabeth Wheeler Towne. Her mother and father named her Elisabeth with an “S” because they did not want her to be called Liz. And what did her husband, my Grandpa Arthur, call her? That’s right, Liz. The rest of us called her Grandma or Grandma Betty (she had 16 grandchildren!) but to Grandpa, she was always Liz.
She was the kind of grandmother storybooks were written about. She was a brilliant, college educated woman and librarian who just loved her family. My father, David, was just one of five biological children and one foster child she raised and loved. She was that Grandma who loved and cherished us, lavished us with hugs and baked goods, and was hardly ever not smiling. Taking trips to New England over the years for Christmas, summer vacations, and little getaways were so wonderful, knowing we were going to see Grandma and Grandpa. She passed away in 2000, but as the matriarch of the family, left a wonderful legacy behind for us all.
This recipe is so simple, yet so rich, and a sinfully good dessert that goes best with chocolate cake. I opted to post the recipe here in her exact words and her measurements. If you don’t understand some of what she lists, just leave me a comment and I’ll give you the substitution.
Thank you, Grandma Betty!
Fudge & Marshmallow Frosting
Cover the top of a HOT cake with cut in half marshmallows or baby ones. When the cake cools, frost with:
8×8 Cake 13×9 Cake
2 squares baker’s chocolate 3 squares baker’s chocolate
1/4 cup milk 3/8 cup milk
1/4 cup Oleo 3/8 cup Oleo
1 cup sugar 1 1/2 cups sugar
1 tsp vanilla 1 1/2 tsp vanilla
Melt chocolate and Oleo, add sugar and milk, and cook 1 minute after mixture begins to boil thoroughly. Beat until thick enough to spread but not as long as fudge. Pour over cake. Cool like fudge before eating.
Yum!
